HOLY SHIT!

Post by ReasonWhyNot »

I don't know how many of you already know this, so pardon me for repeating old news, but I just found out Metal Gears 1&2 will be released with Subsistence and I am fucking psyched. Just had to get that off my chest. It appears that both games will be on the game disc(s) itself and not sold seperately as cell-phone games or any annoying shit like that, which I'm psyched to hear about. All the years we doubted just seem so silly now, don't they?

I'm very excited about that. It's kind of a personal achievement, as I set-up one of the most successful MG1+2 petitions in Official UK PlayStation Magazine (image of the letter is attached), the petition ran for around a year, but the magazine died, and so did the petition.

And the online battle mode sounds pretty nice as well. I guess they decided to put off an entire game based around an online Metal Gear, which is a smart decision if you ask me. And now it actually gives me a real reason to go online. Not for some shitty little camos (which will very likely be included with this game as well)

Hey, wouldn't be the coolest thing it MG and Solid Snake featured an enhanced mode with voice acting? I'd love that!

another cool thing, maybe a bit weird: what if you could unlock after beating MG, a movie replay of the whole MG game with Hideo Kojima's commentary, just like in movies? I would love that.

Doubt they'd bother getting all new voice actors for parts in what essentially are bonus games (I'm trying not to be biased by my great love of MG2:SS while saying this). A lot of purists would likely complain if anything other than the language of the text was changed in the games, too. I've already got the original two games, though, so I'd still find it pretty cool.

Won't happen! That would require hiring voice actors for at least 15 speaking parts (and that's not including bosses) and all the supplemental MG games so far were produced on tight budget. Hell, they didn't even bother developing new settings for Substance's Snake Tales.

Most likely, they're gonna be based on the cel-phone versions, with its various name changes and Shinkawa's artwork.

Not to mention, Kojima always goes on about Audio limitations due to low disc space.

You think he'd have learned by now to limit the shitty dialogue. And if those purists you mentioned would really be getting upset, how come there's not enough folks out there screaming their balls off for the original Japanese voice-acting for the Solid games? Japan gets the English voice acting on Substance and Integral (and presumedly Subsistence as well), so why not get theirs in return? It's not just poorly written dialogue that infuriates me; it's poorly acted dialogue as well, and the Metal Gear series has been two for two ever since MGS2. Either hire competent writers like Jeremy Blaustein or pay the voice actors to do their damn jobs properly, Konami.

You mean MGS3: Subsistence pn PS2?

I bought the poriginal, but I'll buy it again just for this.

When is it out? How much will it cost?

Wait, will it be in English?

Damn, I am extatic about this.

Can I have a source of where you found this out? I'm gonna pass it on to my retro editor, he might mention it in the news section of the magazine.

Sorry for the double post, but Im too lazy to edit my last one...

Will they be playable from the start? Or will I need to unlock them, because tbh, after completing Snake Eater about 4 times, I just haven't got it in me anymore to complete it again.

I just wanna buy the disc, and play the ports.

Feel free to post links on this, since I plan on spreading it around.

I'm glad Kojima decided to give players the option to go with a behind-the-shoulder viewpoint, instead of the traditional "cinematic" camera, but if he really wanted to address a serious flaw in the game, he should have gotten rid of the ridiculous backpack. I don't care what any of you say; that was just the most ridiculous idea and it only validates the fact that realism just doesn't make for an enjoyable experience in games. At least, not in what's supposed to be an action game. I know I'm not the only one who was constantly frustrated everytime you're forced to go into the menu screen just to equip a new weapon or item. Resident Evil alone proved the system is a pain in the ass, constantly having to shuffle shit around and only carry what's most important.

The backpack system didn't really help the game's realism, as you always had the items avaailable, some just take longer to get to than others. I've got used to the system, now, but it used to annoy the hell out of me.

Damn, I can't believed I missed this until now. Very exiting news. I just hope they don't have to be unlocked or some silly nonsense. The extras in Ninja gaiden were ridiculously tough to unlock.

Can't say I'm disappointed, I've got the original games if I want to see the old art and everything. These versions have additions like Boss Survival!

Anyone else feel a little nervous about the transceiver screen reporting the Earth tremor is the same as this: Image
That screen is from the European MSX port. I'm hoping they revise the translation, or else I'll just have to 'destoroy' Metal Gear on my PS2.

That is no reason to get nervous.

In my book that is reason for loosing all faith of a translation, at least to protect me from the blow in case that is what happens.

But thinking things over, oit is most probably just a stock photo... used just to demonstrate what it would look like.

Seems that way, although keep in mind that it's s still a bit too early. Most likely they were using a placeholder screenshot.

What's even more curious is the fact that Campbell's line in the Metal Gear 2 screenshot is not only in Spanish, it's an exact ripoff from from the fan-translated Spanish version of the game (right down to having Roy in the name header, instead of the proper Campbell).

Hopefully, they're not gonna be a bunch cheapstakes for the released version and provide their own official translation.

So do you think we'll get the game before Japan or after? I know we had to wait a few months (into the new year) for Substance and it'll piss me off if I have to do the same with this (and it's not like I don't have enough to be pissed about).

I'm also wondering why Konami would decide to package both of the original Gears with this new edition of MGS3, when they can just as easily sell them as GBA titles and make more of a profit. It's not that I'd want them to do that and I'm happy we're finally getting both games in the states, but since they just released both games for mobile phones several months ago, I don't see why they'd offer them again (for free nonetheless) on Subsistence. It's a very generous extra for the Americans and Europeans, while it's just overkill for Japan. The phone ports just seem unnecessary for their decision to release both games on Subsistence. Anyone want to shed some light why they did that?

Yeah, okay, that seems reasonable enough that I didn't have to ask in the first place. But really what I meant was, they could make even more of the green stuff if they released the games on the GBA, rather than give them for free on Subsistence. So it just seems strange that they're out to make money one minute and being so generous the next. But hell, it hasn't even been a year since MGS3 was released, and already there's a new version coming out (presumedly within the year), so I guess that's just Kojima's way of making it worth our while to get this new version. Except for the Japanese who feel fully satisfied with their phone ports and couldn't give a damn about extra Snake VS Ape missions.

For me, it seems clear why they release them with Subsistance. Lets see, we get a few extra Snake Vs Monkey levels, which although are fun, arnt worth buying Subsistance for, nor is the duel mode or demo theatre really worth paying the full price. The online play would be, but again, not many people or online with Sony, so that would also dampin sales. Now, this is were the MSX titles bring the fan boys and nostalga seekers out, and makes it worth paying the money, and again, there paying more than they would if they were getting the mobile versions or a GBA title.

Because...

A) According to Kojima, the GBA is for the kiddies. (*cough*Foggers*cough*)

B) I don't think anybody really cares that much for Mobile Phone games, outside of the novelty that you can now download 10-year old games on a cell phone.

Playing MG1+2 on a PS2 on a TV screen with a proper controller > Playing them on a cell phone with a small keypad.
