Some random thoughts

Post by Crowley »

Just some random ponderings I've thought of every now and then relating to Snatcher.

I would very much like to know what is the regular course of Junker investigations. In the game you don't really see how these things get started since you pick up Gibson's course of investigation. There is the "hint line" you get when you call Jordan, but that seems rather flimsy as the only source of potential snatcher sightings.

If you try to look up Random Hajile on Jordan the results are strange. On the Sega CD version you get the message "Cannot execute request", which is the same as the first message when you try to read Gillian's or Jamie's files. Note that if you try a nonexistent name, the message is different, something like "No matching names found." How do other versions handle running a search on Random/Randam on Jordan/Gaudi?

Snatchers are quite interesting machines. Or actually quite a bit more than just machines. I especially have been thinking about Freddy Nielsen. He seems to have a penchant for squeezing people's heads off. Actually I'll have to try what happens if you don't do anything when he's got Gillian on a chokehold. Anyways, the point being that Freddy seems to have a clear sadistic streak, and he doesn't go for the most effective solution as you would expect a calculating, logical machine to do. Surely just breaking the neck or a massive blow to the head would suffice? Not to mention the troubles all that blood might cause.

Well, you have to consider that Snatchers are made to be exact replicas of the people they are snatching. Maybe Freddy was a very violent and sadistic person and the Snatcher that snatched him had to act that way so that if/when he did kill someone, it would be in a way that Freddy would have done it.

I haven't actually given a whole lot of thought to how the Snatchers' "personality simulations" work. Looking at the script, a certain Snatcher fooled people he worked with daily at least for two weeks. Do they carry out extensive surveillance to define the target's behaviour patterns? At least the corpses of the snatch victims didn't have any marks that would indicate operations on the brain.

This also happens if you try to look up characters that you haven't "met" yet, such as Chin or Lisa. Once you "meet" them, you can read their profile in JORDAN.

Spoiler:
The data of the person to be snatched is processed to a Snatcher while his/her skin is being fitted inside a cylinder in the Kremlin, I always thought that would include personality as well, although I never understood that would cover the memories of the person snatched, with people being so mistrustful of each other, loss of memory would definitely raise suspicion. I also didn't understand how the data could cover the person's field of expertise either; Chin Shu Oh was apparently snatched because of his knowledge of skin cancer, not because the Snatcher's wanted to use Queen's Hospital (or at least, from Gillian's point of view), likewise when the Turbocycle is sabotaged, Gillian begins to say that Harry could have been the only person who could have sabotaged it, therefore making him the Snatcher.

As far as surveillance goes, wouldn't it have been a little difficult to observe Cunningham that closely? He rarely leaves the office, although saying that, the Snatcher's must have been watching him closely enough to know his movements, Elijah most likely decided to snatch Cunningham after finding out that Cunningham was due to give a speech at the Kyoto Summit, three months in advance, Cunningham was killed a month before the Summit, meaning the Snatcher's had two months to observe him.

You also got to think, Snatcher DOES take place in the future, with security measures increasing more and more each day in reality, I wouldn't be suprised if Neo Kobe City was under full-scale survaillance. As for the Snatchers getting a hold of it, for every new technology out there, there is someone willing and able to hack it.
