Policenauts - English Cover Design
Hey guys.. I'm new here! I design stuff, and someone suggested I might post this here, so.. hey, I registered.
I've been following this project for a while, and since it sounds like it's close to beta I was thinking it would be cool to work on a case design for the english version just for fun, and perhaps to also print up when the patch comes out. Maybe some people can contribute their own designs, too?
Here's what I did, though I cut off the bleed:
(click for huger)
... unfortunately, there's very little art on the internet. The version of Policenauts I have is also the PSOneBooks version, so it's all red and unuseful for my scanning. I managed to find a very JPEGY scan of one of the game covers here, though, so I went to work vectorizing it and cleaning it up a bit.
The aspect ratio of the US PSX cover is also different to the Japanese one, so I had to build on the top and stuff myself. I'd also like to add some kind of 'Not for resale!' note to the cover in the end, too.
I'd also like to do a back and insert and such, too. However, I think I'd need some people's help in scanning stuff to do more. I'd actually like to get a better scan of the cover... I kinda wonder if the illustration exists without the logos and stuff? I had to really fudge the right side, and it would be great to have a better scan to work from in the end. I guess if anyone knows if this stuff exists, it'd be you guys.
Anyway, again, hello and nice to meet you all! Hopefully I'm not breaking any rules with this. Also, thanks to whoever posted the font in the font thread!

That sounds great, thansk for sharing. I think I would be your man regarding scans. It would just be a matter fo you browing what I have and letting me know which scans you'd like for you to work with.
Here's the complete list, and the scans in low resolution.

Any pics of how your vector trace going? I've considered doing this myself, but would rather have someone else do all the work involved.

Hi Artemio!
Thank you for your reply and the amazing offer of help!
I'm thinking it would be great to get something awesome finished by the time the translation is finished..
The standard double case is essentially 2 back pieces facing each other. What I would like to do, when you open it, is to have the picture behind the disk continue onto the manual (The US release of Final Fantasy 7 does something similar to this.. ). Well, I should say insert instead of manual: I'm thinking it would be too much to do an entire manual for this, but maybe a 2 page insert would be easy.
I was thinking maybe one of you guys behind the translation project could write a little bit about the translation project for the insert, maybe do some data on the game and maybe a bit of history about it? I dunno, just an idea. Something short and interesting. Maybe a list of translation members.
... and a disclaimer. I want to make sure these are marked NOT FOR SALE somewhere, and maybe an explanation of this inside the insert.
Art wise... I hope these aren't too much. There's so much great art, so I tried to be judicial about what I picked..
COVER:
To completely repair/recreate the cover art... and finish it..
http://policenauts.net/PSX/CaseFront.jpg
http://policenauts.net/TCP/CardBoxFront.jpg
http://policenauts.net/PSX/CD1.jpg
http://policenauts.net/PSX/CD2.jpg
... I think if I get good scans of these (600dpi if possible, no smoothing from the scanner), I can recreate the cover illustration a bit better.
BEHIND THE DISKS:
http://policenauts.net/images/ContentBackground.jpg
Not sure what these are from.
Plus the circle with the astronaut. I think that would look great behind the disk in the holder area.
INSERT:
Front:
http://policenauts.net/images/Wallpaper ... 80x960.jpg (I'd actually like to use the photo styling and everything..) Did someone here create this? It looks nice. A clean scan of the astronaut group would work, too... like... http://policenauts.net/PC9821/BoxFront.jpg
Interior:
http://junkerhq.net/cgi-bin/display.cgi ... =Mouse+Pad
I think this would make a great piece of art for the interior of the insert.
DISK LABELS:
I think this would make an awesome front for the disk label: http://policenauts.net/FutabaSSGuide/Cover.jpg Split the illustration in half, and splice back in the other half of the astronaut symbol. Put the data on the left side...
N/A
It would be cool to have these:
http://junkerhq.net/cgi-bin/display.cgi ... ards+82-90
http://junkerhq.net/cgi-bin/display.cgi ... ds+R10-R18 (just the bottom row)
http://junkerhq.net/cgi-bin/display.cgi ... ds+R10-R18 (just the bottom row)
Maybe for behind the second disk or something.
Anyway, please let me know if I'm asking for too much..
Thanks again!

Very cool idea's going on in here.
Heres a link to a place that sells jewel cases that have 1,2 and 4 disc holders which is perfect for this project.

Wow, great job! I love the fusion of old and new. And the game would definitely be an "M".

Re: Policenauts - English Cover Design
Sorry this si taking so long, I thought I had all of them in 600 dpi already since I scanned everything in that resolution and then downsampled for upload. But it seems I lost most of my scans. I'll have to rescan them for you. That is no problem, it will just take me some time since I have the scanner at the office and the games at home.
Here are a couple I did have here though.

May I suggest that you do a cover with the old Konami logo too?

This is a really, really awesome project that I'm definitely interested in... But I'm just going to slip a "I'll third that!" in here for good measure. The Spoony Hou wrote:This, please.Marc wrote:May I suggest that you do a cover with the old Konami logo too?

The new Konami logo is a bit lame.

Re: Policenauts - English Cover Design
Hi guys. Sorry it took me so long to reply to this thread, I got sucked away by my day job and then a side project I've been working on for a friend. Thank you guys for the support and comments.
Artemio: Thank you VERY much for taking the time to scan all of this stuff. Take your time! I'm in no rush, and the scans you gave me will allow me to work on some of the other stuff a bit.
I need to check my notes now, actually, and see where I was on most of this.
On the oldschool Konami logo bit, I'd need to find a copy of the old Konami logo, actually. Admittedly I haven't searched around.

Re: Policenauts - English Cover Design
I'll add my sentiments to the 'old konami logo' version label... although Konami did do one reprint with the new one, iirc.
It does look awesome, though.
EDIT: And I'd hope that no-one tried to resell your translation on ebay...

Re: Policenauts - English Cover Design
Hi, Kushami, that is just awesome. I was searching all over Google Images for a decent cover but yours is almost perfect.
Almost...
I'm making PSP EBOOTs and the way they have it for their covers is that there are no logos. Do you have a version of this cover without ANY Konami logo?
Thanks so much, I'll PM you about this as well.

Re: Policenauts - English Cover Design
Great idea and looking good so far.
May I suggest not using the ESRB rating though? Although we're used to seeing it on all commercial releases, it's misleading here since the ESRB never actually rated Policenauts. I haven't played the game yet so I can't guess what they would have rated it, but they rated Snatcher "T for Teen." Either way, I'd much rather just see more of the artwork and less of an imaginary ESRB logo.

Re: Policenauts - English Cover Design
The localized version of Snatcher that they rated was already censored in some ways. The bar was a good example of this.
The english patch for Policenauts can be fully uncensored like the Japanese release. So while the ESRB never did rate Policenauts, it's pretty obvious that it would've been rated M if it were released like this.
