Iwata's speech (Current game industry trends)

Post by Artemio »

I bet most of you read through it... I realy liked it. I am still waiting to watch it on video. But tehre was one part of it that I really loved (I agree with all of it, I am glad Nintendo is there)
Satoru Iwata wrote:Like any other entertainment medium, we must create an emotional response in order to succeed. Laughter .. fear .. joy .. anger .. affection .. surprise .. and most of all, pride of accomplishment. In the end, triggering these feelings from our players is the true judgement of our work. This is the bottom-line measurement of success.
The rest of the speech is available at http://planetgamecube.com/news.cfm?action=item&id=6094

I found it very interesting and also reassuring... since I, particularlky, am not too fond of the big projects out theer today or the general direction the industry seems to be going.

From the mathematical perspective, consciousness might be regarded as a second derivative of sensation.

Well, I read another interesting conference by Greg Costikyan from the GDC, chek it out. Might be a little harsh, but very valid:

Well, I guess there is not much interest in these themes... I must say that I do care a lot about them, and I've found more opinions:

The people starting those restaurants are a LOT like most startup game developers. They think that because they like food, they can run a restaurant.

And on the side, I found reading this interesting in more than one sense:

Plissken, I get "File not found" from that link.

Anyway, I think that the "problem" is exactly that games take a long time and lot of money to make. Developers want to make profit. I'm not quite sure that say, ten-twenty years ago the relative amount of truly good games was all that bigger, but the absolute amount was. It was simply that since it required a much smaller investment to make a game, more were made. Maybe more people were willing to go for something new and exciting, but that doesn't equal quality.

Going off from a tangent here, I think it's kind of similar to the state of manga and anime these days. I've seen/heard some people saying how great all that coming from Japan is. Well folks, that's not the deal. There's plenty of truly horrible and uninspired stuff out there, not to mention the vast sea of mediocrity. There is simply a huge amount of manga made in Japan, and what gets translated and imported tends to be the cream of the crop.

Yes, and thanks for needlessly deconstructing it!
