Convincing your friends to play Snatcher.....

Post by The Hero »

I think i speak for every member in this forum when i say that Snatcher is one of the best games of all time. But lets face it... It's not exactly everyones cup of tea. Which makes it hard to convince other gamers, who aren't really into these types of games, to play Snatcher.

I tried to convince four people to play it, and do you know how many people played it, i mean REALLY played it? ONE!
That guy is a Kojima fan, just like me, and he absolutely loved it! And the rest either never got around to it, or never even gave it a chance. But for the record, only one of those non-players are big Kojima fans like us.

Anyone else have this problem?

I have a friend who played it and loved it. Another hated it. It's not for everybody. The guy who loved it was a Kojima fan like myself, we've been good friends before we were even a fan of the guy's work, he trusts my judgement with things as I trust him about his judgement with movies, fiction etc. We trade a lot of goods about to each other. I didn't exactly force my other friend to play it either, I just preseted it to him, I didn't force feed him info. He didn't like it, but he admitted that he could see why others, including myself would like the game so much.

It also depends who you mean; on the net or people you know in your life?

Well, lets say both.

The guy who played the game, he was on the net, and two of the other three i know in real life.

It was sad in a way, because we all trust eachothers judgements, especially in games. But they never play them anyway. So i have virtually nobody in real life to discuss Snatcher with. Except my 15 year old little brother, who loves the game maybe even more than me. But we never have that good discussions anyways... :???:

I know what you are saying.
I have been running my own Kojima related forums for Finnish people for two years now, there is about 50-80 active users right now. But most of them are only big MGS fans, not really kojima fans. They have just heard about Snatcher. I have even uploaded the game ISO (yeah i know, it's badly done, but...) and sent it for most active users, but only about ten of them have actually played it, and about 5 liked it. :???:

Here in the west, most gamers only know about Metal Gear when it comes to Kojima, and some even Zone Of The Enders. I can't really blame them, since Snatcher and Policenauts and a few other Kojima games were japanese only. Except for the Sega CD version of Snatcher. But the Sega CD wasn't exactly one of the hottest consoles.

I've noticed that most of the people who know/are interested in Kojimas none MGS games are either big Kojima fans or just unaware that they're playing a game made by the "Metal Gear guy".

So, you're from Finland? Then we're neighbours! I'm from Sweden! I checked out your forum, it looked great! Too bad that i don't speak finnish...

Oops, got a bit off topic there...

Nah it's okay, I'm sure neither Snatcher nor Osiris will mind you going off topic, this is no TUS here, it's much more laid back. ;)

I convinced my sister to play it; English version of course. She loved it, although she is hesitant about playing the semi-sequel Policenauts because of the language barrier.
She got stuck on the shooting sections at the end of Snatcher though, and managed to shoot Jamie dead, so I had to do the shooting sections for her all over again! How fun!

I'm playing it with my girlfriend, who is a great fan of Blade Runner, so she has to play SNATCHER in my opinion, plus it is one of my favourite games ever...

Welcome Kalyth. Yeah, I think people who are fans of cyberpunk films like Blade Runner will really dig a game like Snatcher. There are other games out there with the same influence as well, just not as well executed as Snatcher is.

I know a guy on MSN Messenger and youtube. He doesn't know a thing about Snatcher, and when I first showed him the Wikipedia page for it, he must've heard NOTHING about it before then. One thing he said "It's kinda funny how the robot's name is Metal Gear, and how this game was made by Konami too." or someething like that. I should send him the ROM set I downloaded of it, and tell him to get the KEGA emulator.

James, The Angry Video Game Nerd would probably hate Snatcher. He'd probably say something like:

All you do is just scroll through a list of commands and try and interact with things and people and investigate shit, and once in a blue moon, there are these shooting sequences that are ridiculously easy. And plus he'd probably try to tear it a new asshole, and most if not all people would hate it just because he hates it.

Well, AVGN is very much satire, as mister Rolfe himself has stated. I did find it a bit strange that he was tearing up Willy Beamish apparently without even giving it much of an effort. Actually I think he would find Snatcher good enough not to make a "review" out of it. Hey, he even admitted he liked the Sega Genesis Ghostbusters game.

It's like he hates any game that isn't some run and gun platformer where you kill a bunch of guys while trying to get to the end of the level. Let's not forget, he also tore apart Time Gal, and he also tore apart one of the greatest games of all time, Lethal Enforcers. And I never played, but I've heard alot of good things about that Jurassic Park game he featured, and he said it was boring, and I find that hard to believe.

Its never a gamers job to convert other ppl to try a new game. Fuck them! If they miss out or if they don;t like it... Their loss! It s a free world and ppl can like and dislike what they choose.

The AVGN (in his Sega CD tirade) admitted that he did not have the best games for the system, like Snatcher- he called it out by name in his SCD review (go back and see), b/c he said if he did not own it he could not review it and form a POV on it and work that into his view of the system. All his reviews are off physical legally owned games he buys and not pirated ROMs. Send him a real Sega CD copy of Snatcher (HA!! Thats $200 USD out the window!) and I'm sure he would find it to be very fun.

He is a gamer too and I'd think he'd like it for its merits.

I've had the best luck with getting women I'm fucking to get into gaming a bit through games like Snatcher.

I'm a womanizer/ pick up artist (not relevant to this forum- what I do in my life) and have a lot of wild short term relationships. With any of those whirl wind flings there is a phase where, aside form explosively good sex, you get into one another hobbies, music, books and other interests- like gaming (retro gaming in my case).

Women are not stupid and just rail blindly against gaming. They have different brains and very different tastes tho when it comes to pastimes and likes. So it is best to ease them into it.

Snatcher is a GREAT game for girls to play. It is non competitive (unlike Madden or Tekken and such) story based, easy controls, has emotional impact, and has moments of charm and humor to round it out. It plays like a good TV movie with more attachment for the characters and outcome since it is the player making the story advance. Ones feels like he (or she) is really uncovering a thick plot and effecting change when playing it start to end the 1st time. That is a feeling that both women and men can enjoy having.

I usually lead into it (other games too BTW) by talking about what movies and books she likes best. Then ask her if she had yet found other ways that deliver to her the same quality of emotional impact she gets from those media.

Then I talk about how I fell more rewarded when I am in control of a good story experience- interactive like VGs like Snatcher- vs passively watching something unfold to just be given to me. I talk about those "choose your own adventure" books from back in the day as a kid (Snatcher is kind of like that in an abstract way). I get her to think back to if her brothers and shit played games and what she thought it was like. She can have a new POV now on the appeal of this kind of activity when she tries it for her self.

Plus girls like doing things WITH THE GUY THEY DIG (that rapport that being a couple has), so if I am down to show her she will at least try it to please me and do it as a couple's activity. Then 85% of them really get into it form there (and thats a lot of women!!)

With guys, just tell them to play it! Its a good game and they need to try it. Thats all that needs to be done...
We men are more direct and simple to command! :P
