Yes I know...
It is odd. I believe that if it were an Apple product and Steve Job's words, noone would complain... But being it a video game console system...
It has great conceptual design.. but the practical use is... I don't know how to put it.
It'd make me feel stupid to tell people to go and play Wii, besides the obvious connotations that can be given to it.
I think I can live with it, but Revolution was a waaay better name....
Meanwhile, as King Arthur himself would say: "Please! No more! Wii will find you a shrubbery."

The name certainly guarantees no one will forget it. I thought the name was kind of silly at first, but the intentions behind it made sense. i'm sure it'll become part of our normal everyday vocabulary after everyone gets tired of using Wii in failed attempts at humor.

I just don't think that it's as huge a deal as the internet exploded with it. Certainly, because it's Nintendo and the majority of internet game people have created a time where Nintendo's every marketing move is questioned (e.g. GC is for Kiddies), I'm not surprised.
Here's the thing, Nintendo succeeds even when the internet masses turn on them because of their business sense. The Nintendo/kids rep still hasn't hurt them in the way that everyone thought it would.
Personally, the Wii is still FAR more interesting to me then the 360 or even the PS3 (my immediate purchase of MGS4 not withstanding). I'll buy it if it was called the Nintendo Doo Doo.
Hehehe... Doo Doo...

Nintendo seem to be backing their decision very firmly... the same can't be said for Sony and their PS3 controller.

I think my problem with it isn't so much the name itself, but the fact that they changed it after having the name "Revolution" tagged on to it for so long and now, not too long before it's launch, suddenly just jumping ship after putting so much money and time into the original name. I just don't see the logic in it.
But hey, I guess that's why they are millionaires and I'm just a 40-hour a week working class man.

Me on a different forum wrote:I'm starting to think that the whole reason Nintendo renamed their system the Wii is to get attention. The name change was reported on a ridiculous amount of websites (everything from BBC America to The Motley Fool, Google News even had it as one of the top Science and Technology stories), and that alone made people that don't follow gaming at all notice the system. I'm sure a lot of those people who read those articles may even be planning to purchase a Wii now since they've seen how different it's going to be from traditional game consoles and how much easier the controller will be to use compared to the 360 or PS3 controllers.
When thought of in that light, the name change is a brilliant move.

I've heard a lot of speculation that it's just a viral marketing ploy before a 'real' name is announced at E3, supported by Ninty not registering any 'wii' trademarks or even purchasing a 'wii' domain name (the current site is still hosted at
http://revolution.nintendo.com).
I do think this is kinda stretching but it makes for interesting debate.
What do you guys think about the machine? I'm pretty excited about it - if the hardware encourages less.... mainstream games (much like the DS's Phoenix Wright, Osu! Tatake! Ouendan! and so forth) as well as bringing a decent amount of the Nintendo nostalgia a lot of us enjoy it should be a nice alternative.
edit: heh, sorry, revolution.nintendo.com now redirects to wii.nintendo.com

If I remember right, N64 was called "Ultra 64" for ages before the final name, the Killer Instinct arcade machine had ultra 64 logos and stuff on it even and the Gamecube was known as 'Dolphin' at one point. Crazy guys.

Well, don't forget the PSX, the Xenon or the Atlantis, either.

yeah, heck, a lot of people still refer to the psone as psx even though there's that ps2+dvr thing actually called the psx now.

Cruisin' USA had the Ultra 64 logo on it too.
