Subsistence impressions

I've had a chance to spend some time with the game, so I thought I'd pass along my thoughts. Some of this may have been posted by people elsewhere, but I haven't been reading around, so sorry if it's old info.

First the movie. It's edited pretty well, and it certainly doesn't feel like it's over 3.5 hours, so it doesn't drag. The extra narration (which isn't much, really) complements the story well. The quality isn't as good as the in-game cinemas, though, due to space, I'm sure. But the quality of the MGS4 trailer is amazing. If you want any specifics on the movie, I'm happy to answer.

The 3D camera makes a huge difference, I never use the old overhead camera anymore. It works exactly like the Splinter Cell camera, if you're wondering.

The old MG games are faithfully recreated. I've played both in emulation, but being able to use the PS controller and an easy save/load system is much nicer.

There are 2 new Secret Theater movies, one with The End that is really funny. The Snake Eraser movie is also hilarious. :)

A lot of the extras in the game were included in the European version, but if you have a completed save from the original game, these are all opened up at the start -- the Demo Theater (including the Pink Roll), Secret Theater, Duel Mode, the extra Snake vs. Monkey levels, the Briefing, and the Camo Download.

From what I can tell, choosing "I like MGS3!" at the start gives you new camos. And all the camos, including some new ones, that were for download online can be downloaded straight from the game to your memory card after completing the game (or if you have previous completed data from MGS3), but they still take up way too much space. I'm sure that was done to discourage people from having so many at once.

All in all, amazing package. And that's not even counting the Online Mode!

Is there any changes to any of the scenes, I read on gamespot that they altered areas slightly to work better with the new camera system. Did you notice that?

I haven't noticed any, but I'll keep an eye out in future.

I just realized that selecting "I like MGS3!" is the only way to get the country facepaints, in addition to the other camos.

I've beaten the records on the Duel and Snake vs. Monkeys modes in the European version of Snake Eater. Will Subsistence recognize my save or should I do the missions once again to get the records (to unlock the Green facepaint, the DPM & Banana camouflages and the Monkey Mask) ?

Could you tell me which camos, please ? I heard there were Auscam and Flecktarn...

You'll need to beat them again, the scores don't carry over.

As for the I like MGS3 option, you get the country facepaints and the brown facepaint, plus the Auscam, Flecktarn, and Desert Tiger IIRC.

Don't watch the 3rd disc with a big screen TV. You'll really see how bad the video quality is. One thing that bothered me with the editing of the movie is how Snake's camo would change and when he meets up with Eva in the cave behind the waterfall he's holding a revolver. The scene where The Boss sticks the revolver in Snake's pants is edited out so you're wondering where he got the weapon from. Snake's support team isn't really fleshed out so you'll wonder who they are if you're going into the movie without having played the game.

Okay, thanks.

I thought the quality was going to be better than in-game. :?

Maybe he's just a bad editor.

To be fair, there was a lot of content in the original game, and they bairly fit everything onto the disc as it is. The only thing that I think would confuse people about Snake's support team is the fact that Sigint chimes in (with no previous introduction) during the conversation about The Sorrow after you encounter him in the river on the other side.

If you're wondering, the quality of the film is about the same as the Secret Theater movies. They've all got that translucent vertical line running down near the middle.

What camos does he wear in Existence?

Are the actual recorded gameplay segments in Existence good?

How does saving/loading work in MG1 and 2?

Is there a special trick, like the 'pause, F4, ESC' in the MSX original, to restock on ammo and rations without having to reenter a room in MG1?

Snake wears all kinds of camos throughout the movie. They vary depending on the scene.
Bioroid wrote:Are the actual recorded gameplay segments in Existence good?
Yeah, are actually pretty well-done, particularly the boss fights. They've tried to give the gameplay scenes a cinematic flair to them. For instance, there's one gameplay scene involving the cardboard box that made me smile. Many of them are overlayed with radio dialogue.

Pretty much like MGS1, 2, and 3. You press start to open up the pause menu, then you can select save or load. Then you go into a separate screen, like the MGS games, where you select your file. It records the difficulty level and play time.

Not that I'm aware of.

OK, so...how's Metal Gear Online?

Max # of players?
Latency?
Effectiveness of camo/boxes?
Fun factor?

Any further differences between the PS2 and MSX2 versions besides the ones already made in the Mobile Phone version (i.e: face shots, name changes, ect.)? Do they go with Natasha or Gustava?

Before Subsistence you would have had to spend hundreds of dollars acquiring the game (MG2) itself, not to mention an MSX. And same for MG, if you wanted the better version.

I wonder how much it would've costed to import the games before MGS1 became such a huge success. Five bucks?

Not really. As a matter of fact, since they have always been considered great games. But they would have been in their price range. Even regular MSX games keep their price range to date, only a few are cheaper. This is a regular case with cartridge based games, though it is not always true. (That would be 5800 and 7800 yen, around 55 and 75 USD for MG1 and MG2)

MetalGear (boxed, no instructions) cost me £70. MetalGear 2 (Cart only) was £50. Not bad, really. My MSX2 was around £40 and came with around 10 cartidge games, but no way to play them.
