I'm a Little Behind...

So, I got my second Xbox a few days ago (I messed up my first one while soft modding it a year or so ago and ended up trading it for a Gamecube). I received the console with four controllers, remote, a few crap games and Steel Battallion.
Like anyone else, I was intrigued by the possibilities of that controller back when SB came out. I'm not a big time mech fan, but all those buttons got me excited. When my friend whom I bought it from said "it's not too complicated" I was sold. Not taking into account that this friend flew planes in the Air Force and probably has a bit more expertise in the field of controlling large machines with a ridiculous amount of screens, buttons, switches and numbers.
This thing is ridiculous.
Anyone else play this? Is the game really this out there or are my skills just disintigrating? On the grand scale, are intensely detailed, complicated simulations really compelling to people?
Luckily, I got Mech Assault, too

I've had it for some time, and although I don't find it that complicated (since in reality most of the things in the controller are seldomly used, and if you concentrate on the ones needed you can do the job at hand) I don't find it that fun either.
One thing must be said though. The audio and the boot up sequence of the mecha with the controller are a thing to be seen, turing those switches on made some dreams come true.
Aside than that, I prefer either an action game or a simulation game, but it does a well balance.
Anubis any day of the week for me, instead.

Isn't there a button that resets your game and deletes your save, on that controller? It sounds a bit too bizzarre to be true, but after looking at it, I have trouble imagining all the uses there could be for all those buttons.

That's true. The lighting up of the controls and the flipping of the switches was a great moment. I've just got a feeling that the transcendence of stuff like that just doesn't last considering how limited the screen is (compared to newer enviro arcade machine screens) when you're out in the field.
Hmm... It seems that I am missing the large field manual that my friend forgot to give me. That would probably help.
Still, though, I'm already thinking about selling this, since it's still seems to have some worth (if Ebay is any indication) and I don't know if I'll be able to get into it ever.

Yes it has value Painaxl. Specially if it is the first edition. there should be a page out there that documents the difefrences, but they are mainly in the pedals and box if I recall right.
Indeed, the limited visibility is a great pain.. they should have supported wide screen. It is an inteersting thing to show to your friends and play 15 minutes with.. but not a great game. The greatness is built by it's controller and price, not by the game's value.

That si not exactly correct, but close. You have the eject button, with all it's glory: The plastic cap and danger pattern. It even flashes red. If you don't eject when the Mecha is about to be destroyed/Explode, your pilot dies and hence, your save game is erased.
But my favourite is the windshield wiper button. It really cleans the glass when you need it to, if you find the button that is.

That actually sounds really cool. I'd love to play the game, but I don't think I'll ever spend all my money on it.

Hold on for one second, I just want to ask one thing. By your word, if you screwed up your XBox attempting to mod it, how is it that you traded it back in?

Well, I soft-modded it, so I never opened it or anything. I traded it to someone on a messageboard with full disclosure of the issues. I guess a partially softmodded Xbox with the action replay/etc. was worth more to him than a Gamecube w/Resident Evil 0.
Either way, I haven't found many reasons to play the Gamecube beyond the Twin Snakes and Skies of Arcadia.
Any Xbox reccomendations for games out there? Obviously, I'm looking specifically for games not on PS2 or somehow cheaper on Xbox.

I've been flamed every time I've suggested this game on a message board, but Deus Ex: Invisible War is one of the best games on the system. Granted, it's a bit buggy, but it's definetely one of the most immersive games I've ever played. Think Snatcher's cyberpunk universe mixed with a first-person RPG and you're close.
Some other good games include Guilty Gear X2#Reload, Jet Set Radio Future, Ninja Gaiden, Fable, Halo 2 (a must if you have Xbox Live), House of the Dead 3, and Silent Scope Complete (the latter two are only worth it if you are able to buy the Pelican Silent Scope Rifle, which turns into a shotgun for HotD3). The Xbox versions of Psychonauts and the Grand Theft Auto games are a lot better than the PS2 versions, too, so I'd recommend getting those.
