A DVD-Audio ripping tutorial...

I made this tutorial for some people on another message board, so I figured that I'd post it here as well just in case someone could find some use in it.

I tried to make it as simple as possible and provided as many graphics that I felt were necessary.

I hope you find this useful in some way. :D

I use a program called DVD Audio Extractor, and it's about as simple and easy to use as sliced bread, but I'll give your method a crack.

Here's a link: http://www.castudio.org/download.htm

It only does audio, though. I had a go at getting a video out of that DVD2AVI program just now and the output was something quite horrible. No audio, and one frame every two seconds or so, which looked pretty mashed up anyway. Is there a way of getting a decent quality video clip out of it?

And is there a way of getting audio from the DVD that isn't listed as a 'title'. The DVD I'm using has certain audio easter eggs that I'd like to get hold of, but the program doesn't seem to cover them. The same with ripping audio from menus, which you've noted at the bottom of the FAQ. I wouldn't mind learning how to do that.

Anyway, nice work, but have a go at that DVD Audio Extractor program. Ever so slightly easier to use I'd say.

When you preview the track in DVD2AVI you won't hear any audio... but it is there. It's just a matter of converting the .vob file to a movie file (MPEG, AVI, etc.).

As far as the menu music goes, I plan on writing that up today.

I used File > Save AVI after which it came out slightly monged.

When the 'Video Compression' window comes up, what compressor is the best to use?

I've clicked 'Configure' and been faced with a wave of options. Will any of these help?

I'm actually still learning how to convert/save the video part of things. From what I understand, a lot of people use these programs to rip video and they come out rather nice. I haven't quite figured out how to do it properly though. :(

Hhhm, I changed the options around a bit and the quality has upped slightly. Now I'm getting a proper series of frames rather than abrupt cuts from one second to the next. They've still supplied the audio separately, though, and I'm not really sure how to combine the two. Goldwave doesn't recognise the AVI as a proper file, and I can't stand Windows Movie Maker, it's just constantly crashing.

I've udpated it with the menu-ripping tutorial. It's at the very bottom of the page.

Hope that it's helpful.

Well, thanks, but it doesn't seem like those programs can handle my DVDs. PAL Region 2s are probably too much for them. I whacked in The Day Today, and the only 'menu' I could get was the Talkback logo / BBC logo bit, which is not something I want, though when I opened it with Goldwave all I got was "this file contains no audio" anyway. I smashed in a more conventional DVD, The Shining, and got the same message. Oh well, I'm sure it works with Region 1s. I'll just use a mic. Have a go at that DVD Audio Extractor, though; it's well sliced bread.
