First let me say thanks to everyone that is helping translate policenaut's and hi to everyone here I'm new to the metal gear series and I have been wondering what would be the best order to play the metal gear series.

Well there are two ways:

First play the whole Solid Saga (MGS, MGS2 and MGS3), and then play the older games

OR

Play them chronologically! (MGS3, MGPO, MG1, MG2, MGS, And MGS2)

Think which one suits you better. I'd say "start with the Solid Saga".

Well, you could always play them in order of how they were released (MG, MG2:SS, MGS, MGS2, MGS3, MPO, MGS4).
My recommended order is MG, MG2:SS, MGS, MGS2, MGS3, MGS4 and then MG2:SS again to let it sink in that it was the best one. Don't bother with MPO as it's pretty shitty, and hopefully, the plot shouldn't be too relevant to MGS4.

Thanks for the advice guys, but the two main reasons why I have decided to give metal gear series a shot is one because of the release of metal gear solid the essential collection for the ps2 which only cost 29.99 and brings 3 games of the series which is a great deal for any gamer. Two because I remember playing metal gear solid 3 snake eater demo with my friends over and over until I and my friends started beating it quite easily I also remember that in the demo the characters actually spoke in Japanese and the game had English sub titles but for some strange reason I cant remember why I didn't buy the game when it was release for sale in stores I guess I was too busy at the time with my new job back in 04 if I remember correctly, anyway thats my long and boring story why I decided to give the metal gear series a shot.

I'd say play them in the order they were made. Then after MGS4, play them in the order of the storyline.

The order they were released. Then you'd get all the forshadowing in the prequels.

The first MGS game that I played was MGS2, and I found that it really helped me get into the series. It was MGS2 that got me to go from casual gamer to more of a hardcore gamer, with MGS being my favourite series. I could easily recommend any newcomer to start with MGS2. Nowadays, when I play through the series, I play them chronologically (MGS3, MGPO, MG1, MG2, MGS, And MGS2). Infact, I recently started playing through them again, to get myself MORE excited for MGS4. Currently playing through MGS2.

So gooooood.....

I recommend chronological order:

MGS3, MGS:PO, MG, MG2:SS, MGS, MGS2:SOL, MGA, MGA2, MGS4. (You could also throw in VR missions and VR Training somewhere in there, but its not a must have.)

But I have something to say:
I think that no one should even touch metal gear online until they've beaten all of those. need to know the story to know the significance. Also i hate people who skip all the way up to MGS4 without even looking at any of the others and expect to understand wat it going on. it pisses me off, they need to play the others and stop asking us real fans wats going on, find out for themselves like the rest of us did. the real way.

The Acid games aren't part of the timeline.

And I recommend playing them on release order. Makes more sense in terms of playbility.

Man, I wish we had spellcheckers here...

No, they don't. It's been widely publicised that they are spin-offs and have no bearing on the main plot. It's even debatable that AC!D2 might not follow-up from the plot of AC!D. Also, MetalGear AC!D takes place in 2016, while MetalGear Solid 4 takes place in 2014.

I also recommend playing MPO. At least to understand the

identities of the Patriots.

MPO? u mean portable ops? well you can understand
Spoiler:
the identity of the Patriots
just by playing mgs3. dont need to play portable ops.

Yes, I do mean Portable Ops (MPO is the official acronym of the game). MPO/MGS4 retcons the ending timeline of MGS3 in regards to the...

...the identities of the Patriots
For those curious:
Spoiler:
MPO changes the identities of the Patriots from the American branch of the Philosophers in MGS3 to Zero and friends in MGS4.

Actually, I researched MGA2 before buying it (mostly because I hadn't ever played MGS2 or MGA), and I read about a million articles written by various people online who all said that it wasn't in the actual timeline. I didn't necessarily trust this, but then I read the same thing in the Official Playstation Magazine, which is obviously Official, so I assume that they didn't lie about it. Reading that allowed me to play the game without giving me worries about accidental spoilers. So, no, the MGA games aren't part of the MGS timeline.

Yeah, I was curious as to why everyone calls it MPO as well. Before coming here, I would have called it MGSPO (that's the actual name right?), but nobody uses that. I'm guessing that MPO was picked up since that's only 3 letters long, as opposed to 5, which might tax some weaker wristed people to type out.

Basically, It's referred to as MPO within Kojima Productions (and on the "Kojima Productions Report" podcast too, because of that), so it's rubbed off on the fans.

Yeah, I guess when it comes from the major MGS source, then it's probably better to refer to it that way.
