Portable (Sega CD) Snatcher

As of version 1.14 of the GP2X PicoDrive (a Genesis/Sega CD emulator) port, Snatcher boots and runs (60 fps constant with a very minor overclock, PCM/MP3 sound enabled). While it's not an official Snatcher port for a portable platform, it's a feasible way of playing Snatcher on the go (and I honestly don't care much for rebuying portable versions of games I already own).
There's a clip of the introduction sequence running on my GP2X
here (it's nothing impressive though considering the quality of my camera). The GP2X is also capable of outputing video via composite which allows for direct feed videos to be made, one such is available
here.

I have a GP2X, but I don't like using it. The battery life's attrocious, and the homebrew is generally less impressive than what's available on the PSP (which I can finally use for homebrew, again). The lack of a Mega CD emulator on the PSP might have me using my GP2X again, though. I'd be satisfied with the PlayStation version of Snatcher, but I don't speak Japanese.

Do you mean PlayStation version or PCE version?

The PlayStation version, as I know I can run that at full speed (I don't know about PCE emulation on the PSP), and I preffer it to the 8-Bit versions (The MSX version works fine, but I'm not fond of the loading times and lack of speech).

But the graphics and music are just so much worse than the PCE version!

I'm not too impressed with it either in terms of hardware, I like the aspect of it running Linux as it opens for me to write my own applications (which I'd run in Linux or BSD-environments - if I ever got around to polishing my C) and port them to it. I simply can't bother with the whole PSP homebrew firmware mess or learning the quirks of writing software for it when I'm already perfectly proficient in developing for POSIX-OS'es.
For someone who's not interested in development it's probably a pretty mundane platform, though.
The battery life's attrocious
Use powerful rechargeables (2500 mAh+) and you should be able to get battery life as good as the PSP's, if not better (not that the PSP has particularly good battery life).

I wouldn't know, as I'm yet to try it. I'm just very satisfied with the PSP's ability to play PSone games at full speed at the moment (portable Klonoa is really wonderful!)

I also own both.. But I must say that I used the GP2X a lot more for emulation because of the dead on the PSP. The one on the GP is also bad, but I changed it for the custom made ones that were released about a year ago, and also have a couple of v2 ones. It is a long time since I haven't used it, but I am preparing to enjoy Snatcher on it.
I developed for both as well, and only released something for the psp.. but the Neo Geo emulator and 15 minute AA rechargeable batteries made my day =)

I think the GP2X is excellent at running emulators of just about every console I can think of, my friend has one and despite the somewhat poor battery life the machine is pretty amazing considering he got it for half the price of a PSP with a 512meg memory stick.
As for running Sega CD games on one ive never tried it, Snatcher in my pocket, good idea!
I just need to properly download it this time...

Hi. I came on here to tell you guys about GP2X Snatcher, but it seems you already know! Anyway, Snatcher runs great on the GP2X. Fullspeed all the time, with minor audio issues (2nd act, Gillian, Random, and Snatchers before the explosion). This is probably fixed in Picodrive 1.31, which is the latest version of the Sega CD emulator.
I must say that I played Snatcher on the GP2X never having playing any other version of the game before, and knowing about the game's reputation (I love the Metal Gear franchise too). It was pretty incredible! I beat it a couple weeks ago, and now I want to play it again! I'll probably be coming around these boards more often.
The GP2X has come a long way in the last several months. Although the PSP still has better emulation overall, I don't think it's nearly as cut-and-dry as it was before. It's a very legitimate alternative. There's also work on a 3DO emulator, which will hopefully allow Policenauts to be fully playable (minus the japanese, of course)

I tried playing Sonic CD on my GP2X, but it seems that the emulator didn't want to use the BIOS I provided. I might try fixing that or playing a different game on it sometime, but I don't feel much enthusiasm towards it.

Hmm, only use the bios files specified in the instructions. If it still doesn't work, then you probably have a bad file. Either way, it's still an easy fix

What is a GP2X? And how do Sega CD ROMs work?
