Hopefully you guys don't end up hating the game by the time you're finished.

The ultimate irony is that I'm going to finish this ROM hack and the game's going to turn out to be just okay.
Also, wanna help out? I'm holding a contest here.

Everyone at Retroware TV wishes Marc and Slowbeef the best of luck! We have our copy of Policenauts ready and we can't wait to do a big review of the game, the project, and hopefully some interviews and insight with the guys behind the scenes. We seriously can't wait -- we've been waiting anxiously since we did our first reviews almost two years ago!
All the best -

Greetings fellow gamers!
Slowbeefs invitation to contribute to the project in the form of name badges has finally driven me to register at the forums. Since I do not possess a credit card, I cannot register at SA, so I post my achievement here.
I managed to display every full name in the small frame, without having to use abbreviations. As you can see, I also have alternates for "Hostess" (Steward or Stewardess) as well as for "Staff" (Reception or Secretary).
I know that some letters seem a bit dark and maybe discolored at the moment, but please keep in mind that this is just the raw form of what I plan to do. My goal so far was to match the Englisch font used in the translated game and on the other hand to fit every full name inside the small frame. If you like what I have done, I will try to make everything perfect, i.e. alter any pixels color until the project's staff is satisfied and willing to incorporate the badges.
I would be ultimately honored to have contributed to the project with this, so what do you say?

Thanks for contributing snatcher1996, I hope you enjoy it here at the forums.
I think we'll wait for Marc to return to make decisions, so I can't give feedback on any specific one right now.

I've also given this font a crack and I'm pleased with the results. This was the closest to the Policenauts font that I could use.

Any chance to get the boxes being in a native scale more bigger? Say, 72x26?

I'm trying to take a shot at this, but it's just about impossible not to get text that looks like it belongs in a DOS prompt without putting in some aliasing. Are you absolutely sure that these tags must be monochrome, Slowbeef? Or is grayscale allowed? If you ask me, it looks like the original tags ARE grayscale, but there's lots of interpolation in your screenshots so it's hard to tell.

Here are the original tags, unaltered in bmp format. It would be best to receive results in bmp as well, 24 bits but apparently only 8 will be used.

Ah, these DO use aliasing! Or anti-aliasing, whatever its called. In the meantime, here's my monochrome shot at the tags. As you can see, they are not anything like the main text font, BUT they're very clear and readable. Also a minimum of name changes: Stewardess to Hostess, and Receptionist to Clerk. Otherwise, nothing. Comments? I'll get right to work on an aliased version.
EDIT: I'm testing out different fonts to use, and it basically looks like aliasing the text is a big no-no in nametags this small. The original Japanese can get away with it because there are so few characters in every tag, but English words become blurry and illegible. I'm sticking to my original monochrome version below for now.

Looks good, Sonic. Nice and clear, and the longer names are still easy to read.

I don't know if it's required, but here's some idiot-proof Policenauts.net link codes to Solidé's signatures. Just copy the code into the signature line on whatever forum profile you want to use-

Code: Select all

@87th, thanks, that's good because not everyone knows forum BBcode enough to make links in images.
Here is one more again.

Those are all so good, I don't know which one to use. Hmm, think I'll go with the Jon and Ed banner.

Status update time! Marc comes back tomorrow, so I'll know more after talking to him, but here's where we are now. There are five major sections to translating Policenauts.
1. The in-game menus and text. Done by me, no known issues. I'll need some more translation files from Marc to continue testing, but I think it's looking good and done so far.
2. The FMV cutscene subtitles. We found a possible issue here; but it might just be that we're using an older version of some code. More investigation is necessary!
3. The non-FMV cutscene subtitles. We've dumped the Japanese and need Marc to fill out the line-for-line translation file. But I've tested with some fake English (like Scarboy showed off) and we added some niceties (like I made sure linebreaks worked and Scarboy has the translation file outputting Unicode Japanese so it's easier to read)
4. The name badges. That works and looks done - we've just gotta talk about all the candidates you guys and others are providing us.
5. The system menus. That works and looks done.
So, let's see.
Provided (1) works out okay, that really means some more possible programming work on (2) and (3).

Ouch, that's too bad
I didn't realize that so many forums has limited sigs for that kind of size. Actually in most forums i have been there isn't limitations at all.
Well i think it's possible to resize those banners little bit... of course the quality will suffer a bit...
@ Slowbeef, sounds good, i get the feeling like the patch would be released sooner than i imagined. Maybe in this year...?

for the name tags, you could always release multiple patches for different font types or name variations and let the end user choose which to use. it's been done before for roms like the dragon quest 1+2 snes port by rpgone.
and on a side note:
assuming there are no major set backs that cause big delays, i hope you don't complete everything and then hold it for release til a particular day, like thanksgiving or christmas or something. the emulation community in particular seems to love to do "event" launches for stuff and then what happens sometimes is someone who has access to the release (like a tester or friend) then leaks it (or gets hacked) and then it ends up pissing everyone off and everything goes to hell. entire emulators and translations have been canceled because of it. rom dumpers have even quit the "scene" too.

I never imagined video game hackers to be so......... emotional.
