Favorite obscure games?
I know we here like games that not many people play/know about, so which ones are your favorite? Some of my favorite less known titles are:
Godhand (PS2, Capcom)
Chaos Legion (PS2, Capcom) (I know most people don't like it, but I was a DMC fan, so it was pretty cool)
The Bouncer (PS2, Square)
Parasite Eve I+II (PS1, Square)
Vagrant Story (PS1, Square)
Dino Crisis I+II (PS1, Capcom)
What about you guys?

I'd say that Dino Crisis is pretty well known. I remember Dino Crisis 3 was pretty hyped until people realised it was crap. The first game got quite a lot of attention too, as it was being promoted as a Resident Evil spin-off.
I would have listed more if I was basing this on games that no-one's played, but I'm more interested in making a list of games that no-one's heard of-
Snatcher (Mega CD)
Flashback (Megadrive)
Gitaroo-Man (PS2)
Vib Ribbon (PlayStation)
Chibi-Robo (GameCube)
Power Stone (DreamCast)
Rhythm Tengoku (GameBoy Advance)
Gregory Horror Show (PS2)
Astro-Boy: Omega Factor (GameBoy Advance)
Rollcage (PlayStation)
Bishi Bashi series (PlayStation/Arcade)
DragonBall Advance Adventure (GameBoy Advance)
There's also a few games that I love because they're so surreal or they have really bad dialogue. Most of these games are really shit, but I love them because of their silly quirks. This can be seen in a similar way to a list of someone's favourite B-Movies-
Growl (Arcade)
BCV: Battle Construction Vehicles (PS2)
Space Pirates (PC)
Simple 2000: THE Maid Loaded With Machine Guns (PS2)
Low-G Man: The Low-Gravity Man (NES)
Resident Evil Survivor (PlayStation)
Half-Life 2 Survivor (Arcade) [This is actually quite a good game, but if you're a fan of the original, you'll think the arcade machine is very, very silly indeed]
Wrestle War (Megadrive)

Even better on the Sega CD!
Even better on the Sega CD!
This comment, I may agree with. It certainly is a contender for the best platformer for the Genesis. It's a very easy game, mostly, but still, there's very few games that are as enjoyable for the Genesis/Mega Drive. One of my favourites from possibly my favourite console of all time.87th wrote:It's highly recommended. Possibly the best American platformer on the system.joeypete wrote:Nice! I said best American platformer (although, now I think about it, it was made by Konami, so it was Japanese, so I retract the statement). The Megadrive had some wonderful platformers-Henry Spencer wrote:It certainly is a contender for the best platformer for the Genesis.
Sonic 1, 2, 3 & Knuckles
Flashback
Gunstar Heroes
Dynamite Headdy
Alien Soldier
Ristar
Another World (Out Of This World)
Castlevania: The New Generation (Bloodlines)
Quackshot
Ranger X
I'd probably call every one of these games better than Buster's Hidden Treasure. I really like that game too, so that just shows you how much I like the games on the list.
No doubt Dino Crisis 3 was flawed, but it wasn't shit. Though a lot of gamers criticized the premise, I personally liked the idea of dinosaurs in space, and thought it no more absurd than most videogames. If only the gameplay -- particularly that camera -- had been a bit more polished, I think it would've made a greater impact. As it is, it's a reasonably enjoyable game. Though really, Capcom should not have dumped most of its original fanbase when they jumped over to Microsoft. It should've been on the PS2 (I think it would've found a larger audience, at least).87th wrote:I'd say that Dino Crisis is pretty well known. As for my favorite "obscure" games, I'm a long-time fan of the two Fear Effect titles for the PS1. I like the futuristic atmosphere which borrows heavily from many film sources, including Blade Runner and Hong Kong action flicks, and I also like that it was one of the more gratuitous games to appear on the PS1, long before Rockstar created controversy on the PS2. You have a good dose of violence, profanity, implied sex, and drug use (and as EGM remarked in its review of FE2, that was all in the opening cutscene). Actually, the gameplay itself is pretty standard -- bordering on bland -- but thankfully, the story and characters are so engaging that you want to keep playing if only to discover how everything develops. I was really disappointed Inferno never got released on the PS2. Maybe some day.....

Oh, I do know what you meant, I just said I think that it deserves its place alongside the other best platformers in general, not limited to 'best US release' for the system, that's all.87th wrote:I said best American platformer (although, now I think about it, it was made by Konami, so it was Japanese, so I retract the statement). And yes, that list is comprehensible and flawless. Gunstar Heroes, Ristar, Sonic 3 & Knuckles, Alien Soldier and Another World stand out for me too. The rest are also good.

I wouldn't say that Rockstar created the contorversy, it was Jack Thompson and the like...I loved gunstar heroes, and Busters hidden treasure was really fun, even though it did seem like a rip-off of Sonic the Hedgehog in a few places...
